Your iPhone could one day switch to vibrate mode, adjust its own volume, and wake from sleep mode without you lifting a finger.

A patent application published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office suggests a phone or other device empowered with "situational awareness." Dubbed "Electronic device with automatic mode switching," the filing describes ways that the device can automatically perform certain tasks based on different conditions.

Filed in September 2011, the Apple patent application lays out the technology for a variety of devices, including mobile phones and media players. Using such embedded sensors, a device could detect external noises, temperatures, lighting conditions, and time of day, and then react accordingly.

Sergey Brin: Smartphones are 'emasculating'

Mobile phones may generate the fastest-growing segment of Google's revenue, but the experience of using them still bothers Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

Speaking at the TED Conference today in Long Beach, Calif., Brin told the audience that smartphones are "emasculating." "You're standing around and just rubbing this featureless piece of glass," he said.

Using Google Glass requires a fair bit of rubbing as well, and the prototypes have fewer hardware features than most phones. But Brin said they improved on smartphones in certain ways, particularly in having a camera ever-ready to start snapping pictures. (The same camera is also the source of the most serious privacy concerns raised by Glass.)

Apple’s James Foster, senior director of engineering, and Achim Pantfoerder, another manager, are part of the efforts to introduce a wristwatch-style computer, according to the people. Apple has worked on wearable devices for tracking fitness in the past and never brought them to market, said one of the people.

Creating a watch involves unique challenges, particularly managing power demands so that the battery doesn’t need to be recharged every day. Google Inc. has been working on eyeglass- embedded computers and plans to introduce them in 2014.

Good news: Google Glass isn’t just Pebble on your face

I admit it, I was getting worried. After the original Project Glass concept video promised far, far more than the wearable could deliver, and then the public tidbits from Googlers pointed to little more than a hands-free camera and the occasional email notification, I started to suspect Google had entirely dropped the ball with Glass. Less wearable computer, and more strap-a-Pebble-to-your-face.

This is to let you know about an event I’m co-organizing with Google, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Venture Café, and the Kendall Square Association, amongst others. This is a fun social event for entrepreneurs and innovators to talk about what is on the agenda for tech on the state, local and national level. As Congress and the President, State Legislatures and Governors, Mayors and City Councils gather to discuss their agenda for 2013, it’s time for those of us who care about the tech economy and the tech sector to gather to talk about our policy agenda for 2013. This includes topics such as patent reform to defeat trolls, and visa reform to allow more of the world’s entrepreneurs to build their businesses in the US.

As stuff like Google Glass becomes mainstream, we’re going to see a lot more wearable computing devices around. But one thing that isn’t clear is how we’ll control them. One idea is to use gesture control, which would enable users to communicate with wearable computers without having to use a whole separate smartphone or other device to do so.
